Update: Download Classic LucasArts games soon?

Good Old Games is a new type of web-site that will have Good Old Games^TM available for download, either 6 or 10 bucks (either way it's cheap cheap cheap).

This already sounds good to me, someone who's main gaming love is for titles released in the mid 90s -- but there is the possibility that the service could be extended to the LucasArts library as well, making GOG.com sound even more appealing. In a recent interview, a (Mr) Manager of GOG said that:

"Some of our holy grails are probably going to be TIE Fighter or X-Wing, some of the other LucasArts adventure games. Stuff like that would be awesome. I'm sure EA has a lot of stuff sitting in their catalog, Wing Commander and things like that."

He then went on to wax lyrically about the X-wing series in particular, and the possibility of providing real boxes and manuals with the games that people buy from the site.

The games will also all be XP and Vista compatible, since GOG.com will have access to the source code of the games. Another interesting detail is that there will be no copyright protection on the games, meaning that downloading it onto different computers will be as easy as farting.

Obviously it's all still in the planning phrase as far as LucasArts titles go, but it does at least look like GOG.com is a web-site to keep an eye on.

The site will launch in September, with games like MDK, Giants, Sacrifice, Kingpin and Fallout already confirmed for release.

Yeah, a bit, but it may be the best way to create publicity. With a service like this, you need people to know about it, and to sign up for it.

At RPS Adam Oldakowski, GoG’s Managing Director actually said: "We don’t have access to the games’ source code, so we can’t really re-code them. We work hard to make sure all the games run on Windows XP and Vista – that’s both 32-bit and 64-bit systems – and we try to optimize them at the installation stage so that the game install works for each user configuration. If we happen on a game that doesn’t work, we’ll see what we can do; I hope that we never have to make that decision. Giants is worth it for a start - it's by Planet Moon, who made Armed & Dangerous, and was their far superior game in every way.

I played the entire Meccaryn campaign and loved it, but never got past the first Sea Reaper mission. Maybe I should give it another go...

Reaper missions were so awesome. Unlike the first campaign, the gameplay felt more varied. There were a few that blended RTS mechanics as well, which worked surprisingly well. I never played the kabuto campaign though. Maybe I should give it another go... too.

Yeah, all 3 were great. Plus with the blood patch and the boobies patch, the game was restored to it's pre-rating gore and sexiness. Damn funny writing too. What the hell are Planet Moon up to these days. Alls been quiet since Infected and then the SEGA Alien Breed remake (or whatever it was).

And Infected was a pretty big mess... The single-player was fun enough, but the multiplayer (as touted is it was) was practically broken, and the humor wasn't there as strongly as in Giants and A&D. I hope we hear from them soon.

My theory is that LucasArts is trying desperately to remove all traces of their old classic titles, so that the newer generations may never know that the company is just a hollow shell of what it once used to be.
