We say: The second in the planned Loom trilogy, Forge starred Rusty Nailbender, the young Blacksmith from the first game. This sequel further explored the situation found at the end of Loom, with the Dead overrunning the world of the living, and the universe itself having been rent in two halves.
Rusty's goal was to rescue his father, the Foreman of the Forge (the Blacksmiths' city). The elder Nailbender was being held in the Dead Ones' floating prison, a giant storm cloud that had been created out of the Forge. Rusty would be guided by the spirit of Bobbin Threadbare, who would appear occasionally to give advice, in the style of Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Star Wars movies. The Loom hint book suggested that some of the unused spells found in the game's Book of Patterns would show up in sequels. Some of these include Tongues (allowing the weaver to understand other languages), Temblor (which causes volcanoes to erupt), Folding (used for teleportation), Desire (which works similarly to Loom's Terror spell), and Extinguishing (for putting out fires). Others are Blessing (to create "good luck" in things such as gambling), Shrinkage, Confusion, and Waterproofing. Forge was being worked on by Mike Stemmle and Sean Clark around 1991-92. They were called off the project to make Sam & Max Hit the Road, after the low sales of Loom made LEC management reluctant to do a sequel. Therefore The Fold, the third game in the series, was cancelled as well without having ever started production. Also reported to be on the team of the game were artist Mike Ebert and Loom team member Kalani Streicher. Interestingly, in various interviews Brian Moriarty has insisted that a Loom sequel never got off the ground to any extent, saying that his idea for a trilogy, which he only conjured after Loom was made, was all "just talk." He also claims that the decision to not make a sequel had nothing to do with sales of Loom, which he has said sold well, but rather with lack of interest from himself and other team members. It is unclear who is lying/confused about the development of a second Loom game as the claims posted above come from multiple former LEC employees. They say: No official remarks from LucasArts have been found on Forge, except confirmation that it existed, as given by Mike Stemmle and Sean Clark at E3 2001. |
